Valentine’s Day

We took some time this week to create Valentine envelopes. This was an open ended art project and the creativity was impressive. On Friday, the students exchanged Valentines with their classmates and spent some time playing various board games with friends from 4A. Thank you to the parents that sent in food for the party, it was delicious!

Riverview Transition Pancake Breakfast

The grade 4 students walked over to Riverview Middle School on Thursday for a pancake breakfast and school tour. They really enjoyed the pancakes, bacon and juice! Following the breakfast, the students were divided into groups and escorted around the school by the junior high drama students. They were welcomed into many classrooms, the learning commons and the gymnasium.

Skip-A-Thon - Jump Rope for Heart

The students participated in various skipping stations this week during our P.E. block and were introduced to many new jump rope techniques. On Friday, the classes rotated around the gymnasium skipping in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Language Arts

Our Kidblog writing schedule this week included:

Journal Writing Monday - Weekend Post

Talk About it Tuesday - Qualities of a Good Friend

This week we did a fun Valentine’s Day writing project about a “Magic Box of Chocolates.” We began with the students closing their eyes and imagining that they have walked into a candy shop, looking for a Valentine's Day gift for a loved one. The sales lady shows them a special box of MAGIC Valentine's chocolates. When their loved one bites into the chocolate, the students' wishes for that person comes true. The students were asked to choose three different flavours of chocolate fillings and three wishes to go along with those chocolates. Each student was given a Pot of Gold chocolate to inspire them when thinking of possible filling for their chocolates. Then they recorded the three chocolate flavours and the three wishes on a planning organizer. The students continued the writing process by completing their rough draft, which included a topic paragraph, a detail paragraph for each chocolate, and a concluding paragraph. The focus of this project was to use descriptive words and elaborate detail to draw the reader in.

The students typed up their paragraphs on the chromebooks and illustrated their wishes on three separate circles to represent the chocolates. These chocolates were glued on a heart to create a Magic Box of Chocolates.

Math

This week we continued with our Multiplication unit by focusing on 2 and 3-digit by 1-digit word problems. We also completed an assessment of the students’ knowledge of the multiplication unit.
Please be sure to have your child practice the multiplication flashcards that have come home. The ability to memorize their multiplication facts will help a great deal with being able to answer
more complex multiplication questions.

Congratulations to our XtraMath superstar!

Social

Mrs. Spreen brought in some Indigenous artifacts that her grandpa collected. The grade 4’s spent some time in 4C while she shared the spear heads, mallets, and various other tools made from rock. She also brought in a buffalo hide that the students were able to touch!

Science

We started our new unit on Wheels and Levers. The students were introduced to the topic with the following video Simple Machines, which explained the 6 simple machines. The six simple machines include:
1. Wheel and Axle
2. Pulley
3. Lever
4. Screw
5. Wedge
6. Inclined Plane

There are three types or classes of levers, according to where the load and effort are located with respect to the fulcrum. Class 1 has the fulcrum placed between the effort and load, Class 2 has the load in-between the effort and the fulcrum, and Class 3 has the effort between the load and the fulcrum.

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
