Wellness Day

We had our first Wellness Day this Friday. The whole school rotated through various stations, participating in food, fun, mind and body activities for the afternoon. This is always an event that the students really enjoy.

We also went on our first field trip to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. The students were taken through:

The Materials Recovery Facility, which processes recyclables collected in Edmonton’s recycling programs.
The Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility (IPTF), which prepares waste for composting, conversion to bio fuels or transfer to landfill.
Global Electric Electronic Processing (GEEP) Alberta, which processes and recycles e-waste, including electronics dropped off at Eco Stations.

This field trip was excellent and ties in so well with the Waste in Our World unit and the recycling the Grade 4's do all year long in our school.

In L.A, we began our author study of Chris Van Allsburg (author of Jumanji and The Polar Express). We started by learning a bit about Van Allsburg's life as a child and as an adult. The students completed an Author Study Survey to see which authors were their favourites and why. We were then introduced to some of Van Allsburg's books and did a book walk to see what the students noticed in the illustrations.

We also read The Frank Show by David Mackintosh.

There’s more to Frank than meets the eye...
A quirky, witty and utterly brilliant picture book from the award-winning creator of Marshall Armstrong is New to our School.
Frank is your typical grandad, but no one has a grandad like him...
If you had to stand up and talk, for one whole minute, about a member of your family, who would you pick? Everyone else chooses really cool people, like Tom’s Uncle Marlon who plays drums in a band, or Hannah’s mum with her company car. But there’s nothing cool about grandad Frank... or is there?
In this hilarious, wise and heart-warming story, awesome new picture book talent David Mackintosh shows, with a supreme lightness of touch, just how much the older generation has to teach us, and how much fun learning from them can be.
To go along with this mentor text, the students have been asked to complete a biography assignment on a grandparent. On Monday, we will be completing the written portion. I am excited to hear about all the exciting things the students have to share from their interviews.

In Math, we finished up our Place Value unit with comparing and ordering numbers. We wrote our unit test on Friday and will begin our Addition and Subtraction unit next week. The tests will come home next week and watch for the marks on PowerSchool. The students did a fantastic job!

In Social Studies, we have been talking about the physical geography of Alberta. We will be covering all 6 of the natural regions. This week we focused on the Canadian Shield, Boreal Forest and the Foothills. We are reading through our notes together and highlighting the important information.

We also spent some time locating and plotting some of the cities and towns in Alberta.

This week we reviewed the proper formation of the cursive letters Gg and Qq.

Jersey Day!

In P.E. this week, the students worked through various Manipulative Skills Stations.

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!

Look What We've Been Doing

 Genre Tasting
This week we partnered up with 4A and participated in a Genre Tasting morning. The students loved this format of being exposed to a variety of different book genres. They made a reservation with a group of 6 students and rotated through 8 different genre tables. The genres that we focused on this time were - Biography, Informational, Science Fiction, Humor, Graphic Novels, Realistic Fiction, Fantasy and Fairy Tales. After spending some time looking at the books they were "served", they chose one and read a portion of it. Following this, they completed a rating sheet of their book and had some time to share with their table mates. After rotating through all 8 tables, the students completed a reflection and were served a little treat. The students loved this activity!

Remembrance Day Ceremony

The grade 4 students did an amazing job reciting "In Flanders Fields". There were also some students who sang in the choir, led by Mrs. Stanski.

The students also worked hard on poppy art that was displayed in the gym for the ceremony.

Our Kidblog posts for the week were:
Weekend Update - Monday
Talk About it Tuesday - Favourite Reading Genre
WeSearch Wednesday - What is Climate?
Week in Review - 3 Things I Learned, 2 Things I Liked and 1 Question I Have

We spent some time learning about verbs. A verb is a word that shows the action in a sentence. It shows what someone or something is doing.

We also spent some time reviewing the cursive letters A and D. We will work our way through the alphabet focusing on the proper formation of all of the letters.

In Math, we completed our assessment on the first few lessons in our Place Value unit. The students were assessed on the following outcomes:
- identifying the place value of digits in two, three and four digit numbers
- writing number words for numbers up to ten thousand

Congratulations to our XtraMath stars!! Extra practice at home is sure paying off!

In Social Studies, we began our study of Alberta - A Sense of the Land. We started by filling out a KWL chart about Alberta. We also completed a dictionary dig to learn the definitions of some common terms that will be used throughout the unit.

We also completed an assignment where the students had to research the climate in several cities and towns in Alberta. They were given the Government of Canada - Alberta Weather Conditions link in classroom. They were asked to find the minimum and maximum temperatures for each place and record it in the chart. Using this information the students were asked what they noticed about the temperatures throughout Alberta.

Congratulations to our first STUDENT OF THE WEEK!!
