We had our first Wellness Day this Friday. The whole school rotated through various stations, participating in food, fun, mind and body activities for the afternoon. This is always an event that the students really enjoy.
We also went on our first field trip to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. The students were taken through:
The Materials Recovery Facility, which processes recyclables collected in Edmonton’s recycling programs.
The Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility (IPTF), which prepares waste for composting, conversion to bio fuels or transfer to landfill.
Global Electric Electronic Processing (GEEP) Alberta, which processes and recycles e-waste, including electronics dropped off at Eco Stations.
This field trip was excellent and ties in so well with the Waste in Our World unit and the recycling the Grade 4's do all year long in our school.
In L.A, we began our author study of Chris Van Allsburg (author of Jumanji and The Polar Express). We started by learning a bit about Van Allsburg's life as a child and as an adult. The students completed an Author Study Survey to see which authors were their favourites and why. We were then introduced to some of Van Allsburg's books and did a book walk to see what the students noticed in the illustrations.
We also read The Frank Show by David Mackintosh.

To go along with this mentor text, the students have been asked to complete a biography assignment on a grandparent. On Monday, we will be completing the written portion. I am excited to hear about all the exciting things the students have to share from their interviews.
In Math, we finished up our Place Value unit with comparing and ordering numbers. We wrote our unit test on Friday and will begin our Addition and Subtraction unit next week. The tests will come home next week and watch for the marks on PowerSchool. The students did a fantastic job!
In Social Studies, we have been talking about the physical geography of Alberta. We will be covering all 6 of the natural regions. This week we focused on the Canadian Shield, Boreal Forest and the Foothills. We are reading through our notes together and highlighting the important information.
We also spent some time locating and plotting some of the cities and towns in Alberta.
This week we reviewed the proper formation of the cursive letters Gg and Qq.
