Terry Fox

On Friday we gathered Terry Fox toonies from around the school and then we sorted, counted and rolled the coin. Our class alone brought in over $55 to support the Terry Fox Foundation! Way to go, 4B!

On Friday afternoon, we bundled up and head out on the route for the Terry Fox walk.

We finished our WeSearch Wednesday paragraph on Terry Fox. The students compiled their jot notes into a detailed paragraph about Terry Fox. They used a split screen on their chromebooks to take information from their google doc and transfer it to their Kidblog paragraph.

Our grammar focus this week was on Common and Proper nouns. We worked through various activities each day, over the course of the week, relating to nouns and especially focusing on capitalizing proper nouns. For example: A common noun would be "restaurant" and a proper noun would be "Florida Pizza".

We also completed a Making Words activity. The students were given the letters REEMCDOOPS and they were to build as many 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 letter words as they could. They were also encouraged to figure out the "mystery word". This is the word that they can spell using all of the letters. The mystery word this time was DECOMPOSER.

Then they got in groups to compare lists.

In Math, we worked on T-Tables, as a continuation of our Patterning unit. The students are becoming quite confident in figuring out patterns, the gap between numbers, extending and creating pattern rules.

The students also played some math games - Soldier Salute and Addition War.

Congratulations to our XtraMath superstars! They completed the addition level and have now moved on to subtraction.

In P.E. we played Dragon's Jewel and this has now become a 4B favourite! We also had a little free time fun with a few different equipment items on Friday.

We started our first Science unit this week - Waste and Our World. We began the unit by creating a list of all the items our class thinks is WASTE.

Then we played a KAHOOT game, to see what we know about waste in our world.

The students worked through a digital version of a KWL chart. They completed the section - What I KNOW About Waste. We will work through - What I WANT to Know next week.

We used the QR code reader on our chromebooks to access a site to learn more about Recycling in Nature. Then we completed a food chain which highlighted the decomposers role in recycling.

We also watched a couple great videos - Food Chains and The Dirt on Decomposers

One of our classmates has moved and we wish her all the best at her new school!

Our Week...

This week, once our narrative writing for our Kidblog post was done, the students were given a Blog Editing Checklist. This checklist contains all the important elements that have been taught for completing a well written paragraph. The students used this checklist to edit their own work before publishing. This post was assessed and their mark will be on PowerSchool soon. Please let me know if you are unable to view your child's marks.

We also completed the HLAT, which is a writing assessment used to guide our teaching. The students had 15 minutes to complete a planning page and 45 minutes to complete the writing portion. The topic was...Think about a friend or person you respect, or who demonstrates kindness.

We spent the week doing some grammar activities. Our focus this week was on Subject and Predicate. The subject is the person or thing that is doing the action. The predicate is the part of the sentence that contains the action. Both elements are the key to a good sentence.

We also started a new program on the chromebooks. Typing Club is a program used to encourage the students to use the proper hand placement on the keyboard. This program teaches the correct fingers to use for each letter, with individual directions and activities to complete before moving on to the next set of letters.

We are continuing through our Patterns and Algebra unit. This week we worked on extending a pattern using a rule. The students also had to identify the rule in a group of numbers and create their own pattern and pattern rule.

We also spent some time playing some math games like Addition War and Soldier Salute.

In Social, we completed our Mapping unit this week. We reviewed how to read a legend and spent some time learning about Latitude and Longitude; the vertical and horizontal lines that divide the earth into sections. These lines cross forming a grid, which GPS uses to find a location. These lines are also used on maps, globes and in atlases. This is the video we watched to help explain Latitude and Longitude. We also completed an activity where the students found points on the grid.

We had our first Healthy Hearts movement break to GoNoodle in the classroom. The students all participated with the videos.

For P.E. we played some cooperation and locomotion games. Worm Race was a favourite.
