February 24th - 28th

February 24th - 28th

The students participated in their second Wellness Day this week. They rotated through various food, fun, mind and body stations with mixed grade groups.

Wednesday was Pink Shirt Day. On Pink Shirt Day, students are encouraged to wear something pink to symbolize that we, as a society, will not tolerate bullying anywhere. It is so important that victims of bullying know they are not alone and there is help and support available. Often, the simple act of wearing a pink shirt can start conversations - conversations can be a big step towards healing and helping! As part of Pink Shirt Day, our class completed a “Pinkitforward” mock Instagram post where they sent positive messages to their peers. They loved this activity and so much kindness was spread!

Thank you so much to the parents who helped us out on and off the ice this week. The kids had a blast and have improved so much. They especially enjoyed the instruction they received from the NAX coaches on Wednesday and Thursday.

Language Arts

Our Kidblog writing schedule this week included:

Prefixes

This week we focused on prefixes. A prefix is a group of letters that are added to the beginning of a word. The letters change the meaning of the word. The students were specifically assessed on their ability to identify the meaning of the prefixes un, pre, dis, and re.

Math

This week we started our Number Sense - Division unit. Goals focused on include:
-translate among division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction equations.
-understand the relationship between multiplication and repeated addition.
-understands the relationship between division and repeated addition.
-understand when to use multiplication or division to solve a word problem.

The students were also assessed on their knowledge of the division unit to this point.

Congratulations to our XtraMath Superstars!

Science

We continued to learn more about simple machines in preparation of our Building Devices and Vehicles that Move unit. Specific concepts that we focused on in more detail included the screw, included plane and gears.

The students enjoyed watching the Bill Nye “Simple Machines” video to reinforce the concepts learned throughout the unit. We are looking forward to starting our building project on Monday. If you haven’t already, please be sure to send in any materials that you have gathered for this project.

Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
